Yesterday, approximately 10 years after hiding a bronze chest full of gold nuggets, coins, gems, rubies, diamonds, and more, Forrest Fenn has confirmed the treasure has been found!
It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago. I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot.Forrest Fenn
I’ve always been a bit of a data nerd. For this reason, things like puzzles, hidden messages, clues, and like have always scratched a certain part of my brain that just excites me. This is why I was mildly obsessed with Forrest Fenn’s book, The Thrill of the Chase.
In the book, Fenn includes a map of the Rocky Mountains along with a carefully crafted poem that contained 9 clues. If you’re able to solve the poem, you’d be led straight to a 40lb roman style chest full of riches. The chest Fenn says contained over 20 pounds of gold nuggets, rubies, diamonds, sapphires, ancient necklaces, and countless other valuable artifacts. It’s been estimated to have a worth between $1 million and $3 million dollars by today’s prices.
The treasure was hidden “somewhere in the Rocky Mountains north of Santa Fe, NM” by the eccentric retired art dealer around the year 2010. An estimated 350,000 people have gone to the Rockies to look for the treasure and a small handful of people have actually died trying to find it.
When asked why he hid the treasure Fenn shares with us several reasons. The first he said is to get people back out in nature. “Too many people are spending time on the couch and on their phones”, he says. The second reason he hid the treasure is because during his time as an art dealer he became fascinated with finding new artifacts and searching for paintings for his gallery, and he simply wanted to share that “Thrill” with the world.
So around 2010 he set off to a secret location, known only to him with a 20lb roman style treasure chest filled with over 20 pounds of precious loot, and he hid it somewhere in the Rocky Mountains.
This incredible story has come to an end, and I’m certainly happy for whoever found the chest.
